A hot flash brings a quick rush of heat to the neck and face area making you feel like you have a fever.  Many times it can be accompanied by profuse sweating that may make any clothing you may be wearing wringing wet.  This may be repeated hourly throughout the day and night.

No one is sure what actually causes hot flashes but they usually happen when a woman goes into menopause. The sweating is probably caused by the body trying to lower the sudden change in temperature. If you are in your home you can probably have less flashes just by reducing the temperature. Just wearing sandals instead of shoes and socks will help to keep your body temperature lower also.

Some women start experiencing hot flashes as young as forty. Approximately 40% of menstruating women that are in their 40′s have them. So they can actually start before a woman goes into menopause. Besides the hot feeling you get you may also feel your heart racing and have feelings of anxiety or have a headache. Having a hot flash in public can be very uncomfortable and even a little embarrassing because to the people around you, you may look all red and sweaty.

Approximately 85% of women say they have had hot flashes. But usually only about 15% have any that are severe enough that they go to the doctor about what to do to stop them. Many women just find their own ways of alleviating the symptoms by layering their clothes, exercising and changing the way they eat. Stress reduction and relaxation with meditation and yoga helps many women. Just drinking a cold glass of water may help.

Many women can tell when one is coming on. They may get an uneasy feeling or even a little sick to their stomach. Some even get a hunger feeling so be sure to have lots of fruit and vegetables handy so that you don’t over eat on high calorie foods when you get this feeling.

So if you start to get these symptoms just remember that it is only temporary. And by using some of the above techniques you can learn how to get some relief from your hot flashes.
